my thoughts

Brain Dump: Well well well, 2009 is here! 2008 was a great year for me! I had some time to think about what it was that I wanted to do with my life. I finally stopped kidding myself and got out of finance. I had an interesting gig in advertising for a second that seemed like a fun job but not exactly the right environment probably. And now I am back in school finally pursuing my passion. I have a feature film to edit, a YouTube mini series to establish, and a script to write. Oh and a little known thing that many of you may or may not know. I used to do some DJing back in the high school days. Myself and my friend Scotty used to have this small mobile DJ Crew called Intensity Sounds (IN-10-CT Soundworks to be exact). We used to do the local high school dance scene for a solid two years. Scotty handled the hip hop and I did the high energy dance music. Yanno, Pinay, Jocelyn Enriquez, Josette, Buffy, and anything R&B song that became a Saint John remix. We also put out two mixtapes that featured 30 minute mixes on each side of a tape. We called it "Big Nutt 1" and "Big Nutt 2". Yes we were extremely mature for our age. Well my other good friend Ellan decided it would be really funny to find and showcase our old business cards. So having not finished our Big Nutt trilogy, I thought it would be a good idea to do another mixtape and bring it back to the old skool (and by old skool I mean mid to late 90's music). So that's something that I'd like to do before the year ends as well. So speaking of New Year's resolutions, here are a few of mine...

1. Finish a script

2. Get back in shape (said every year)

3. Maintain healthy relationships with those that I care about

4. Finish school

5. Go somewhere I've never been

6. Make a High Energy Mix Tape

7. Maintain my website

8. Catch an Ulua (said every year)

9. Floss

10. Learn a new hobby

Personal Matters: My house is a dump right now. I need to clean it. It doesn't help that I have a butt load of dirty clothes from my Hawaii trip now sitting in my bathroom.

Script Update: I have my post its going. I am just brain dumping ideas, storylines, dialogue, feelings, and tone right now.

Brain Dump: As 2008 comes to an end, what can we say for it. Fog City Vibe and Monster Spaceship took its foothold. The Celluloid Android media network took its foothold. All will look to extend into 2009. Up and coming media artists in the queue include Hyp from Triple Ave, The Evangelist of Soul Vibe, Josh Weitz publisher of Oh Dang Magazine, and reggae band Kapakahi who are currently finishing up their EP.

Monster Spaceship as a media production company will look to continue working in the short format video production and continue to reach out to local independent artists and media makers. The Celluloid Android network will continue to look for new up and coming artists for purposes of collaboration and promotion.

As far as media in 2009, I wonder what the next step will be? I have been scouring some of the trades and media sites and found some interesting perspectives on the look ahead. I saw an article on a company called ToDo Cast. What they do basically is provide a satellite link for videographers with the capabilities to connect and send their work through the airwaves. The pros to this are that they aren't bogged down by bandwidth and connectivitiy via the internet. They can send large files relatively easily. ToDo Cast looks to only bring on about 300 videographers to use this service. The cons? Well from what it looks like, the videographers have to drive around in a pickup truck full of satellite equipment. So for the casual hobbyist, looks like you'll be sticking with the wi-fi connection at your local coffee shop. But it seems like an interesting step because it prepares packages for both broadcast and internet distribution.

And then we have the issue of internet distribution of media. With companies like TiVo and Netflix changing the nature of traditional consumption, where will the broadcast and cable companies evolve into? With TiVo and DVR takinga foothold in the American home, time and place are becoming of lesser and lesser importance to the consumer. Now, consumers can record and watch their favorite programs whenever they feel. It will be harder and harder to determine demographic information and time blocks. Furthermore, advertisers will have a more difficult time. So it is will be interesting to see how they evolve. Huge amounts of ad dollars seem to be shifting towards mobile advertising, as advertisers seek more creative ways to touch their consumers in non-traditional ways. Netflix is changing the face of media consumption as well. With streaming video becoming more and more popular, will media consumption through the television going to be challenged? Will the television go the same way the as the newspapers? Unlikely for now. But something to think about as the internet becomes a more highly used mode of consumption.

Professional Matters: Editing continues on Captive Audience

Personal Matters: My tree is beginning to dry out.

Personal Matters: I got my haircut. Apparently for $11 I get the "Miliarty Cut" at the local Irving Street barber shop. I look silly.

Personal Matters: It looks like Santa's sleigh vomited on my rug

Brain Dump: So here we go again! I am looking to reinstitute this website! It has been in existence for some 3 years now? It has gone through several facelifts and several attempts at sustaining some level of life through blogs and such. And there is no reason to believe this time is any different. Since the last time I posted to this site, I have finished my first semester at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. I had started a job in advertising as a media planner for Venables, Bell, & Partners for about 6 months. Then moved on to UBS. I felt the need to go back to finance for a bit. I soon realized how much i disliked that industry. Actually, the industry itself I find fascinating for the better and for the worse. It was actually the person I worked for. She made it tough to say the least. Anyway, it was a blessing in disguise because after about 3 months at UBS, my disgust for her repelled me over to media. I rediscovered my love for media production and decided to go back to school for it! I find out from Emily that her friend works as an advisor at AAU in SF and that they are starting a new Master's program in Multimedia Production under the direction of Jan Yanehiro and Steve Kotten! These are old school local television personalities and entrepeneurs. So I jumped at the opportunity. So far so good! I'm loving producing and learning again. I credit the creation of Celluloid Android (www.celluloidandroid.com) which will soon transition to Monster Spaceship (www.monsterspaceship.com) to this. Monster Spaceship will be my own media production flagship. I hope to use it as my production company and/or my professional profile page. I will post things like my resume and (eventual) demo reel and portfolio there. On top of this, I am also trying to start a YouTube series called Fog City Vibe. It will live on YouTube. I have always been of the thinking that the San Francisco Bay Area has a rich and diverse media market. There are so many talented people here. I know many myself and that is just the tip of the iceberg. My plan with Fog City Vibe is to do short 2-3 minute segments on such media makers where they can talk about there skills and showcase their craft. It can be viewed on this website in the "videos" section or on YouTube at www.youtube.com/thecelluloidandroid. Great stuff! There are so many things going on in my head right now its crazy... Anyway, I also helped to Co-Produce a feature film with some talented independent local filmmakers concurrently while doing my school thing. These filmmakers have been involved in projects such as Colma: The Musical, Option 3, The Princess of Nebraska, Fruit Fly, and The Spirit. It was a great pleasure working alongside these folks and a great and talented crew. I have brought back my love for assisting in the creative process that I had taken a break from and nearly lost over 4 years ago. But I believe I have found my passion again and will keep things updated. Currently, my first semester ends today. So I will take a short break and then go full on with the editing of a independent feature film I was hired on to do called Captive Audience. I will be leading the post production for this project under the direction of another local independent director from New Harvest Films. I am greatly looking forward to what the future will bring. I am finally feeling comfortable with where I am. This has a lot to do with the fact that I finally believe in what I'm doing. No more stock market. No more sales. No more ad planning. From here on out its all about producing, editing, and writing. My future plans at this point include writing and producing my first feature film. I would like to do this before I'm 30. So I have just under 2 years to do this. Better get on it...

Personal Matters: I am off to Hawaii from 12/27-1/4 with Emily! We're going to visit my good friend Scott and his family on the Big Island. I'm going to take her fishing and also celebrate her birthday! I also want to introduce Em to my Father at his burial site, which is a huge deal to me. I am really looking forward to it!

Personal Matters: I need a haircut....bad...

Personal Matters: Christmas shopping is taking a toll on me...
